Butanding Interaction Center Guide
Swim with Gentle Giants: A Whale Shark Encounter in Donsol Guide
The Butanding Interaction Center in Donsol, Philippines, offers a unique and unforgettable experience: the chance to swim alongside whale sharks, locally known as "butanding." These gentle giants, the largest fish in the world, migrate to Donsol's waters between November and June, making it one of the best places in the world to observe them in their natural habitat. This is a responsible and regulated ecotourism activity focused on conservation. The Butanding Interaction Center was established to promote responsible whale shark tourism and conservation. Before its establishment, whale sharks were hunted in the area. The center's efforts have transformed Donsol into a thriving ecotourism destination, providing alternative livelihoods for local communities and fostering a greater appreciation for these magnificent creatures. The center plays a vital role in monitoring whale shark populations and ensuring that interactions are conducted in a sustainable manner. The primary activity at the Butanding Interaction Center is swimming with whale sharks. Before heading out to sea, you'll receive a briefing on responsible interaction guidelines to ensure the safety of both the whale sharks and the swimmers. You'll then board a small boat with a trained spotter and guide who will help you locate the whale sharks. Once a whale shark is spotted, you'll have the opportunity to enter the water and swim alongside it. Donsol is known for its fresh seafood. Many local restaurants offer grilled fish, shrimp, and other delicacies caught fresh from the sea. Try the Kinunot, a Bicolano dish made with flaked fish (often shark or stingray) cooked in coconut milk and chili.
